The Lord of Hosts

By Dr. Richard Ing

July 11, 2009

We were created to be men of war.  God created us to be soldiers and warriors.  “No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life: that he may please Him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.”  2 Tim. 2:3-4.  God called you and me to be soldiers in His mighty army for the end times.  We are told to put on the whole armor of God.  Eph. 6:11-17.  The armor is not so we can lie down and sleep; it is to allow us to fight the enemies of God as God’s warriors.

We were created by God to fight for His kingdom.  That’s why Jesus came – to set us free from sin, reconcile us with God and give us the weapons we need to destroy the demonic kingdom.   We may live in the flesh on earth, but we are soldiers in the kingdom of God.  All of heaven looks down and sees us.  Heb. 12:1.  They are waiting for us to learn how to stand up and destroy Satan’s kingdom.

“And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence and the violent taketh it by force.”  Mt. 11:12.  The New International Version puts it this way:  “From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been forcefully advancing, and forceful men lay hold of it.” We are not called to be passive people.  We are called to be forceful and violent in our attempts to advance the kingdom of heaven.  We need to go to war and fight for the kingdom of heaven.

We were not created to watch TV or sports or to play Nintendo games while our family members, friends and neighbors are falling into hell and while we give lip service and pretend to be concerned.  We are to fight for their souls like warriors rescuing the people from the grasp of the enemy.  We were created to fight against the kingdom of darkness, not to enjoy life and to engage ourselves in entertainments. Every champion of God has put on his whole armor of God, picked up his sword and weapons of war and engaged the enemy head on.

Instead, we have made peace with the enemy while he is plotting behind the scenes to double-cross us and destroy the church.  There can be no peace treaty or compromise with the enemy.  When you compromise, you let your guard down and the enemy is secretly building up his war supplies to attack you when you are at your weakest.  You are on his annihilation list. God has you on His mind, but so does Satan.

The church has been on rest and recreation for over a century now. As a result, the Church has been attacked, destroyed and plundered by the evil one and is in ruins today.  There is no power left.  False doctrines, apostasy, luke-warmness and shepherds interested in their wallets and the good life have led the sheep into a ditch.  Many are walking the broad way to death and hell and have no inkling of what is happening.  Deception is everywhere.

As in the days of Nehemiah, God is calling on a few men and women of valor to begin to restore Jerusalem and God’s temple.  Men and women rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem and the temple while their enemies surrounded and attacked them.  The Bible says that they rebuilt Jerusalem and the temple while holding their weapons in one hand and working on the walls and buildings with the other.  Neh. 4:17.  So it is today. Jerusalem is not just a city; it is God’s people.  The world has taken over the church and impacted the church instead of the church impacting the world.

God has called us to restore the kingdom.  On one hand, we have to work in this world, support our family, raise the kids, do certain worldly things.  But on the other hand, we have every spiritual weapon of war necessary to defeat the kingdom of darkness.  We have knowledge of spiritual warfare, how to cast out devils, heal the sick and raise the dead.  But most of us have put our weapons down and are concentrating on building our own little kingdoms on earth, oblivious to the spiritual wars going on.  Ignorance may be bliss, but it leads to death.  Jerusalem cannot be restored by passive people.

The churches are in love with entertainment – music, skits and even hula dancing.  It titillates the flesh.  That’s the highlight of Sunday services all over the country.  There is a place and time for praise and worship and it is important, but with most churches that is all there is.  The sermons are entertaining and philosophical, but teach nothing about the war that we are in and how to fight the enemy.  It denies the power and authority in us.

The Church is in ruins and God wants His Church back.  God wants to restore His true Church.  He has called this church to stand up, gird up its loins and run to the battle.

No one who truly serves God is a passive, lazy servant, casual about the greatest war going on.  God’s people are fierce warriors.  They know that they have the power of God in them.  The power of the Godhead resides in them by the Holy Spirit.  They can cast out devils, speak in new tongues, heal the sick, raise the dead and restore life to the church.  They know that “we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”  Eph. 6:12.  They come to the help of God.

We are in a war.  The greatest war of all time is not between Russia and the U.S. or between China and the U.S.  The greatest war going on is between the kingdom of darkness and the kingdom of God.  You and every person on earth are in the thick of battle whether you know it or not and whether you care or not.  You have no choice.  If you are not fighting back, you are already a casualty.  The church is filled with the dead.

The church was called by God to be His army on earth and to establish His kingdom on earth.  You can’t establish God’s kingdom on earth by watching TV or making money or going on permanent R and R.  God has given us armor to fight the enemy, not watch TV.

You can’t convince me that you’re agonizing over the unsaved and have a burden for lost souls as you watch TV or play your computer games.  A battle is raging all around us and people are falling into hell by the thousands every day while we twiddle our thumbs.

God is not a wishy-washy old man sitting down on His throne and watching TV.  He is a fighter and a warrior.

The name of God is “the Lord of hosts.”  The word “hosts” means “army.”  He is called the Lord of Hosts over 240 times in the Old Testament.  God Himself said, “My name is the Lord of Hosts; that is My Name.”  Is. 47:4; Is. 48:2; Is. 51:15; Is. 54:5; Jer. 10:16, etc.  The word “hosts” means a gathering of people, an army.  God is not a God of cub scouts and sissies.  He is a God of mighty men and women who are fighters and warriors for God.  He has called us to be conformed unto His image, to be soldiers and to fight for the kingdom of God, to take back territory from Satan forcefully.

The church is used to praying and interceding quietly and even in whispers.  “Dear God, please help my friend.  Bring him to the Lord Jesus.  I claim my friend for the kingdom of God, convict his heart and draw him to Jesus.”  We need to stand up and fight!  God gave us the power and authority to fight the enemy for your friend.  He called us to bind up the spirits of stubbornness, deception, spiritual blindness and whatever evil spirit that is preventing your friend from coming to God.  We have the power to destroy strongholds in our friend’s mind, to break curses.  We have been called to speak the Gospel of Salvation boldly so that the Holy Spirit can convict his heart and draw him to Jesus.  We need to stand up and fight.

In our prayer sessions, we need to pray against Satan’s strongmen forcefully.  The walls of Jericho came crashing down when the Israelites shouted.  When God shouts, His enemies fall.  Jer. 30:30, 31.  God goes up to heaven with a shout and will return with a shout.  Ps. 47:5; 1 Th. 4:16.  There are many verses, too numerous to mention, that command us to shout.  We are to shout against the enemy, not sit passively and purr like a pussy cat.  Let’s get up and fight!  Let’s roar like the lion of Judah!

Let’s remember who we are in Christ.  We are mighty warriors in God’s army.  We have been anointed and sent out to do war, not to languish in our lazy boy chairs, watch TV and get fat.  You are either fighting for the kingdom of God or you are a prisoner of war.  The choice is yours.
