Power Started Revival

By Dr. Richard Ing

December 26, 2008

There are many articles and books on how to conduct house church meetings or establish house church systems.  Some teach that loving people and having compassion are the major character traits of a pastor.  Others teach how to conduct house church meetings by letting everyone participate, the need to evangelize and so forth.  A number of articles focus on the role of training house group leaders and their assistants.  All of them have something to contribute.  Many pieces were written by evangelicals that do not believe that the Holy Spirit is still ministering on earth.  Therefore, their writings concentrate on methods, techniques, social interaction and programs.  Conversely, Spirit-filled writers highlight the importance of letting the Spirit lead each meeting.

But, there is much more.  Keep in mind that our goal is not to start a house church movement.  It is to spark a worldwide revival.  Such a proclamation seems prideful, impossible and even stupid, but it was prophesied twice over this church that we would spark a revival and unite the churches.  It came from Dr. Frank Hultgren, the former official prophet to the faculty of Oral Roberts University.  We have received other similar or related prophecies.  It is our mandate from God.

I believe that the last harvest will be even greater than the first harvest in the days of the original apostles.  The gospel of salvation will be preached in the entire world before the end.  In Matthew 24:14, Jesus said, “And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.”  Also, Mk. 13:10.   The scope of the coming harvest will far exceed that of the early church.  The first revival/harvest covered the Middle East and areas surrounding it.  The coming revival, however, will involve the entire world and will be completed in three and one-half years.  Hundreds of millions will come to Jesus.

If the coming revival will greatly exceed the harvest that took place in the days of Peter and Paul, it must contain almost all of the features of the first harvest and much more.  Immediately after the disciples received the baptism of the Holy Spirit in Acts 2:1-6, three thousand were added to the church.  Ac. 2:41. A few days later, five thousand were added.  Ac. 4:4.  “And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.”  Ac. 2:47; Ac. 16:5.  Why was this happening?  Was it because of great organization or great preaching?  This is an important question.  How are we ever going to parallel and even exceed the scope and effectiveness of the first revival/harvest described in the Book of Acts?

To answer that, we need to go back to the instructions the Lord Jesus gave His disciples about sharing the Gospel.

Just before Jesus returned to heaven, He gave an explicit command to His disciples regarding how they were to establish His kingdom on earth.  In Acts 1:4, the Lord “commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which saith He, ye have heard of Me.”   In other words, “Wait!”

The disciples were so very eager to go out and tell the world that Jesus died on the cross and came back to life and that He paid the price for the sins of mankind.  But Jesus commanded them to wait, to tarry - do not go out and evangelize until the promise of the Father is received by them.  What promise?  It was the promise that the Holy Spirit would come and live in each follower of Jesus.  Jn. 14:1618; Jn. 16:7-15.  What was the reason?

The reason was power!  In Acts 1:8, the Lord said, “But ye shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”  In other words, wait until you have power and can demonstrate and confirm the word through signs and wonders by the Holy Ghost.  Then you can go out and share the gospel of salvation.  Of course, the Holy Spirit came to do much more; but one of the most important reasons was power from God.

In Acts 2:1-12, we find that the Holy Spirit came on the day of Pentecost and each disciple received the baptism in the Holy Spirit.  From that day on, the people of God could minister with incredible power to heal, cast out devils, raise the dead and do miracles.  Multitudes came to the Lord and within two years, all of Asia had heard about Jesus.  Ac. 19:10.  His name was on the lips of countless witnesses.  The early church was established in the midst of incredible fire power from on high.  The people that witnessed such unbelievable miracles – the casting out of devils, healing of the sick, raising of the dead and miracles of all kinds were in total awe and trembling.  These miracles left no doubt that the Lord Jesus Christ is God.

The people were so astonished that they sold their possessions and give it to the apostles for the work of the Church.  No clever or enticing words were necessary and in fact, were avoided.  The apostle Paul stated:

And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God.  For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and Him crucified.  And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling.  And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power.  1 Co. 2:1-4.

No organization, radio, television or other man-made program or system can spread the gospel of salvation and bring multitudes into the kingdom of God the way the Holy Spirit can.  No ordinary conversion will cause men to sell their possessions and give them to the church and to unite their hearts in the way they did in the Book of Acts.

God will never allow man’s ideas, clever programs and technological advances to steal His glory.  Only the power of the Holy Ghost and the His convicting power can give glory to God.  That’s the way God did it when He established His church and kingdom on earth and that is the way God is going to take His church back.

The people witnessed the speaking of strange tongues in their own dialect.  Great fear came upon the people as many wonders and signs were done by the apostles.  Ac. 2:43.  A man lame from birth was healed.  Ac. 3:1-8.  Angels came to free the disciples from prison.  Those that believed were of one heart and of one soul.  Ac. 4:32.  The people were all of one accord.  Ac. 5:12.  The shadow of Peter touched the sick and they were healed.  Ac. 5:15.  Many sick and vexed with spirits were healed every one.  Ac. 5:16.  Incredible miracles, signs and wonders were wrought by the apostles.  Ac. 5:12.  Many other signs and wonders, too numerous to mention here were done by God’s people.  That’s how the early church was established.  God wants His church back!

During the last twenty years, we have studied, trained and practiced healing the sick, casting out devils, raising the dead and other miracles by the power of the Holy Spirit.  Each one of our members has been given years and years of training and opportunity to cast out devils, heal the sick, raise the dead and trust in God for miracles.  God has already trained us.  It’s up to us.

We need to pray for a greater anointing to heal the sick, cast out devils and do miracles.  We cannot and should not plan on convincing people to accept Jesus through man’s wisdom or techniques.  We should boldly heal the sick, cast out devils and trust God to demonstrate His power through signs and wonders.  Otherwise, we can never bring true revival and unity to the Church.

All of man’s ideas are useless to start a Holy Spirit revival.  It is when we totally depend on God and are willing to boldly declare His Word and back it up with signs and wonders that God will move mightily.  There can not be a Holy Spirit revival without people willing to stick their necks out to confirm the Word through signs and wonders by the Holy Ghost.  All the advice on how to evangelize, socialize, conduct meetings, train house church pastors and establish house churches will never bring revival and unity without signs and wonders to confirm the gospel of salvation.

This coming revival will witness the most incredible outpouring of the power of God ever seen by man.  God will expect nothing less than He expected from His original apostles and saints.  He will expect no less from you and me.

The early church was established in the midst of incredible fire power from on high, and we can expect no less this time around.  Get ready!
