Holy Spirit

By Dr. Richard Ing

BAPTISM IN THE HOLY SPIRIT

There were at least two magnificent things the Lord Jesus did for us that changed the course of history and paved the way for a new race of people in His image.  First, Jesus died on the cross to pay the price for our sins.  He served as our sin sacrifice for all eternity.  Then, the Lord gave us His Holy Spirit to dwell in us.  When you become born again, God gives you a new heart and a new spirit.  Then, He puts His Spirit in you.  Ezekiel 36:25-27; 18:31; 11:19-20.

The Holy Spirit is just a tiny seed in your heart.  It is called an earnest deposit.  2 Co. 1:22; 2 Co. 5:5; Eph. 1:14.  The fullness comes later as we grow in the Spirit.  The true Christian walk is one in the Spirit and not in the flesh.  Ro. 8:1-14.  All true Christians are led by the Spirit of God.  Ro. 8:14.  When Jesus was walking in the flesh on earth, He said, "Follow Me!"  When He returned to heaven, He said, "Follow the Holy Spirit." The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Jesus.  They are One.  Phil. 1:19; Ac. 3:20; 1 Jn. 5:7, 8.

The early church was birthed in fire power from heaven.  The same power is available to all Christians today by and through the Holy Spirit that dwells in them.  Jesus did all of His miracles through the Holy Spirit that came to dwell in Him when He was water baptized by John, the Baptist.  Mat. 3:16; Mk. 1:10.  That's why the Lord Jesus said, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall be do; because I go unto my Father."  Jn. 14:12.

All born-again Christians have the same Holy Spirit in them that Jesus had and who did all those wonderful miracles in the Bible.  Ro. 8:11.  "And these signs shall follow them that believe; In My name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues . . . they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover."  Mk. 16:17, 18.

The devil does not want you to know that and has been busy deceiving the church so that few churches are paying attention to the Holy Spirit and seeking spiritual power today.

You need the Holy Spirit power to cast out devils, heal the sick and raise the dead.  In order to have spiritual power you need to be baptized in the Holy Sprit.  If you are not baptized in the Holy Spirit, you can only pray and ask God to do something and hope that He will do it.  Once you are baptized in the Holy Spirit, however, you can just do it yourself in the name of Jesus.  You will be able to command spirits to leave and sicknesses to go.  All the champions of God that performed marvelous miracles in the past were tongue-speaking, Holy Spirit filled and baptized Christians.  Smith Wigglesworth, T. L. Osborne, Benny Hinn and Oral Roberts were all baptized in the Holy Spirit and spoke in strange tongues.

In Acts 1:8, Jesus said, "But ye shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto Me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth."             In other words, after you are baptized in the Holy Spirit, you will have power to testify, followed by signs and wonders in the Holy Spirit.

Water baptism is when you are submerged in water.  You participate with Jesus on the cross and in His death and burial.  When you come out of the water, you come up into resurrection life with Jesus.  Ro. 6:3-5.  The Holy Spirit is in you as a small deposit.  He is like a small light in you.  As you walk faithfully with God and grow spiritually, the light becomes bigger and bigger until the Day Star rises in your heart and you become like the Lord Jesus, the bright and morning star.  2 Pet. 1:19; Rev. 2:28; Rev. 22:16.  No, you will not be a god, but the Holy Spirit in you will fill you until you shine like the morning star.

In Acts 2, the disciples were gathered in one place when all of a sudden, a sound from heaven like a rushing wind came where they were sitting and there appeared cloven tongues of fire on each of them.  This was all in the Spirit.  They began to speak in new tongues.  Acts 2:1-4.  It was a stammering type of language and was prophesied in Zephaniah 3:9.

Tongues is the language of angels.  Demons hate it.  Your mind cannot understand it, but your spirit does.  God does too.  Sometimes, others can interpret your tongues through the Holy Spirit.  1 Co. 12:10.

After they spoke in new tongues, the followers of Jesus Christ had power to do miracles.  Ac. 3:1-11; Ac. 5:12, 15; etc.  Tongues is for all Christians, but the devil has deceived the church into disregarding it and many churches do not teach it.  That's why the church has very little spiritual power today.  Tongues is for you too.

There is nothing for you to do but believe and desire to be baptized in the Holy Spirit.  You don't need anyone to lay hands on you in order to be baptized in the Holy Spirit, although it would be helpful.  If you want to be baptized in the Holy Spirit, lift up your hands to heaven, close your eyes, and just believe and pray:

Dear Jesus, I want to serve you with all my heart and preach the gospel of salvation to others with power and signs and wonders following.  I believe in you and you are my God and Savior.  I forgive all those that have sinned against me and I repent of my own sins.  Please forgive me and wash me clean with your blood.

I believe in the baptism of the Holy Spirit and I want to cast out devils, heal the sick and do miracles.  I promise to give you all the glory.  Please baptize me in the Holy Spirit and give me a new tongue.

I now open my heart to the Holy Spirit and receive the baptism with thanksgiving.  Thank-you, Jesus.  Amen.

There is nothing for you to do but believe it and receive it.  Now, open your mouth and start to speak in new tongues.  Some start off by saying, "Halleluia, Halleluia, Hallelu, lu, lu, lu - "  Then, a new tongue comes to them.

You have to move your lips and say something in faith - whatever comes up to you.  You cannot just wag your tongue.  Close your eyes and in your mind's eye, look at your stomach.  (The Holy Spirit dwells in the innermost part of man, in the "belly.)  "He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water."  Jn. 7:38.  Strange words are coming up.   Speak them out loud.  Speak it, Say it, Do it.

Keep on going.  You will know when you are baptized in the Holy Spirit.  Some people feel light or feel like rain drops falling on them.  Physical sensations are not important, however.  Just faith.  You will find a joy you never had before.  Thank God for it.
